ToggleNFL Blitz 2000, officially a sports game, is as different from actual football as Event Horizon is from an auteur film. Blitz is about quick thinking, huge plays, lengthy passes, and forceful strikes. It’s a football game you can pick up without reading lengthy instructions or studying page after page of data because it’s arcade action at its best. Due to the adrenaline, you receive while playing the game, you only have 10 seconds to choose your play and even less time to get the ball in the air before three powerful defensive linemen are in your face.
You can save a lot of quarters over time by playing NFL Blitz 2000 on the PC, which retains all of the features from the arcade version. NFL Blitz’s core gameplay concepts remain the same, but the 2000 edition has a few great additions that elevate it above the original. The play editor, which lets you design your own attacking and defensive plays, is one of the most obvious additions to this year’s game. Executing attacking plays is simple.
Plays on defense are as simple. All you have to do is edit your defensive back routes using a normal setup. Once your movements are designed, you can test them against the computer AI to see how well you would play in a real game, or you can practice them against no opponents to acquire a sense of everyone’s routine. This is a much-needed amenity that was absent from the trip the previous year, and it adds a nice touch to the Blitz heritage.
Better pass control is also added in the Blitz 2000 edition. This eliminates doubt about where you’re pointing before you release the ball, which is very helpful when you’re attempting to outrun a defender and want to pass to a receiver who is going in the other direction. In NFL Blitz 2000, you can also call audibles to confuse the defense if they are in a formation that will likely blow your initial play.
NFL Blitz 2000 functions largely in the same way as its arcade counterpart. I only have one significant control issue with the PC version. You have to use the keyboard to launch the game and the gamepad to access all of the options if you want to play it that way. This is useful in multiplayer matches since it allows a single person to set up the game, but it annoys other players while playing alone. If you unintentionally touch the start button, you’re forced to use the keyboard to go through the menus for the game’s duration.
